Kosai ware

Kosai - from the Japanese ideogram meaning ‘hue of light’

Kosai ware is a new and unique vapor-glazing technique in which luster glazes and metallic salts
are combined to create the dramatic swirls of iridescent rainbows.

The process involves multiple firings - sometimes up to six - with a combination of luster or
mother-of-pearl glazes, metallic over-glazes, and even the addition of actual precious metals,
such as gold, platinum & bronze.

The piece is then fumed by vaporizing (or spraying) small amounts of chemical salts (such as
stannous or ferric chloride) to produce the vibrant range of varicolored hues.
